Nearly 900,000 deaths in England could have been avoided in the last 16 years if society was more equal, researchers claim. A study of 2.5million early deaths found one in three occurred due to a person lived in a socially and economically deprived area. The findings, published in the Lancet Public Health, also suggest 22,000 children could have been saved had they lived in a more well-off area. One death every 10 minutes, and 50,000 a year, are caused by inequalities, the researchers at University College London said.

The researchers say that the study can help inform where public health resources are needed most. Dr Lewer added: “These results show that social inequalities are linked to more than 50,000 early deaths in England each year. To address this, we will need policies that will reduce inequalities in income and wealth that underlie differences in life expectancy. It doesn't help that £900million has been cut from public health services that help smokers quit, treat alcohol and drug dependence and tackle obesity. The cuts have fallen disproportionately in areas where we found the most excess deaths.”

Shisha and hookah lounges in Los Angeles could be closed as the city considers banning flavoured tobacco. The ban, to be discussed by the city council's Health Committee hearing today (6 December 2019), is a bid to curb tobacco use among teenagers.

Owners of hookah lounges have said that the ban could affect shisha/hookah lounges in Los Angeles. The city is mulling six variations on a ban, from a total ban to one with exemptions, but the City Attorney Michael N Feuer recommends the strictest restrictions.

Nearly one third of US high school students have reported using an e-cigarette or tobacco product in the last 30 days, according to a CDC survey released on Thursday 5th December.

E-cigarettes were the products most used, with 27.5% of high school students and 10.5% of middle school students reporting use in the past 30 days. Researchers noted that one in three e-cigarette users also used a tobacco product, such as cigars and cigarettes.

The American Lung Association is urging smokers to quit smoking altogether rather than switching to e-cigarettes. The organisation has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to clarify the risks for users.

The FDA says that it has worked hard to regulate e-cigarettes since 2016, "but our policies and procedures in this area are still evolving."
