[1]Cori Bush
John,
Immediately after news broke that the Supreme Court had officially ruled
in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization to overturn Roe v. Wade
and our constitutional right to abortion, Missouri became the first state
in the country to make abortion illegal.
This will be remembered as a stain on our country’s history.
Obtaining an abortion at 18 after I was sexually assaulted at just 17
years old was the hardest decision I ever made. It took a long time to
feel like me again. And although I felt so alone, I felt resolved in my
decision and freed by the power I had to choose. So here’s my message to
all the Black girls, women, and people who have had abortions and WILL
have abortions: We have nothing to be ashamed of.
We live in a society that has failed to legislate love and justice for us.
We are worthy of better. I know there’s a lot of fear right now, but
please hear me out, this isn’t the end of our fight.
We need to take action ourselves — together, we need to show up for our
neighbors no matter how hard or scary it gets. We need our movement to
come together to protect abortion access for everyone, but especially
Black, brown, low-income, queer, young folks, and people with disabilities
who are disproportionately harmed by abortion bans.
We will organize harder than ever to abolish the filibuster to pass the
Women’s Health Protection Act and expand our Supreme Court.
I promise you, John — we will not
stop until abortion rights are guaranteed for all. I will continue this
work alongside movement leaders and share our stories until action is
taken.
