John,

While kids are out of school for the summer, so many families are dealing
with the high cost of child care.

When my daughter Besty was in preschool and I worked at UC Irvine, the
cost of preschool on campus was more than what it cost to be an
undergraduate student there. Now with three school aged kids, I (like most
families) worry about paying for child care while saving for college.

Child care costs have risen faster than most other major expenses like
healthcare and housing. And a lack of reliable and affordable options
means that women’s workforce participation has been the lowest it’s been
in decades.

For too many families child care is their biggest expense. That holds
people back from saving for college, buying a home, or even starting a
business. Our country has never invested in child care, and the
skyrocketing cost is bad for families and bad for the economy as a whole.

I’ve led the fight to cap child care expenses at 7% of a family’s income,
and as one of the only single parents in Congress I’ll continue pushing to
lower costs for families.
