There’s little doubt that protests have taken center stage across the Americas over recent years. Cuba is no exception. Nearly a year after some of the most significant public demonstrations in the island’s recent history, the human rights outlook remains concerning with activists and artists behind bars for expressing their views while ongoing U.S. sanctions are exacerbating the unprecedented humanitarian situation on the island.

Cuba is not the only country where short-sighted U.S. policies have had detrimental repercussions. For several decades, WOLA has been analyzing the consequences of the U.S.’ “War on Drugs” in the region. We are now seeing how prohibitionist policies are affecting not only public health but the environment and contributing to climate change.

Latin America’s historic current levels of migration were a central concern at the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles in early June 2022. Maureen Meyer, WOLA’s vice president for programs, and Lesly Tejada, WOLA’s program assistant for Mexico and Migrant Rights, were in Los Angeles for the summit, and shared their views of what happened there.
