Who's celebrating Eid ul-Adha 2022?

Eid ul-Adha is fast approaching; it is the second of two major festivals on the Islamic calendar and i celebrated by Muslims each year. It follows on from Eid ul-Fitr which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, that fell on Monday 2 May.

The date of Eid ul-Adha is based on the sightings of the moon, here's when it is predicted to take place this year. The Eid ul-Adha is predicted to begin the evening of Saturday 9 July and will last four days, coming to an end the evening of Wednesday 13 July.

Eid ul-Adha is sometimes known as 'Big Eid' and is considered the holier of the two festivals. Eid ul-Adha is sometimes celebrated by some Muslims giving money to charity to give poorer families the chance to have a proper Eid feast, while mosques and community groups will often arrange communal meals. The phrase 'Eid Mubarak' is traditionally used to greet one another as a celebratory greeting.

We would like to wish everyone who is celebrating Eid, a happy Eid ul-Adha. Have a great time with your friends and family.

Taxi driver loses licence after council uncovers attempted fraud

A private hire driver has had his licence revoked following an Oldham Council investigation into fraudulent documents.

In June 2020 Yasir Qudratullah, of Eton Avenue, Oldham sent his insurance certificate and vehicle log book into the licensing team. Officers noted that alterations had been made to the insurance documents.

Qudratullah was charged under the Fraud Act 2006 and pleaded guilty on the day of his trial.

At a sentencing hearing at Tameside Magistrates’ Court Qudratullah was fined £80 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 plus council costs of £600. The council’s licensing panel subsequently removed his licence.

Summer reading challenge

Oldham Libraries are inviting young readers to take part in this year’s free Summer Reading Challenge.

The annual event challenges four to 11-year-olds to read at least six books during their summer holiday to earn rewards and improve their literary skills.

This year’s theme is “Gadgeteers”, which will hopefully inspire young readers to reach for the stars and explore how science and maths help create brilliant inventions and devices.

There are stickers and prizes to collect along the way, and a medal and certificate at the end and it’s all free.

Research shows that encouraging children to read for pleasure can improve their language and communication skills.

To take part in the Summer Reading Challenge pop down to any of the borough’s libraries or for bookings from July 15 see the full list of events ([link removed]) .
