John:
It is absolutely terrifying that Illinoisans who set out to celebrate our Independence Day and enjoy Highland Park’s time-honored Fourth of July parade suddenly found themselves running for their lives. At least seven of them never made it home. The last time I heard a weapon of that capacity firing that rapidly on the Fourth of July was in Iraq, and I never thought I would hear it on American soil.
Last month, Congress proved that bipartisan compromises on gun safety are possible. However, this tragedy shows that we can’t stop there. We have to do more to keep our communities safe. We have to pass additional commonsense reforms that wide majorities of Americans are crying out for — that at least seven Illinoisans can no longer cry out for.
We have to do more. We need to pass bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Highland Park actually has an assault weapons ban, but this is a great example of why we need a nationwide ban. Because people can go outside the city to purchase these weapons and then come right into places where the residents have said, “we don't want these weapons here.”
Everytown has been a leader in our work to make our communities safer from gun violence, and I am proud to join them and do all I can to help their cause... But we cannot do this alone. We need your help to get it done.
