When COVID-19 hit, the burden of childcare and education fell heavily onto parents — especially mothers, and especially women of color. As a result, an unprecedented number of women left their full-time jobs.
Data shows how disproportionately the pandemic impacted working women: between 2019 and 2020, the number of women in the Chicago workforce dropped by 36,092 — as compared to 10,957 for men. This is the result of decades of systemic inequality and failures to support working mothers.
Mayor Lightfoot is committed to changing that. And this week, we had a big win! The minimum wage increase she fought for in 2019 finally went into effect.
But we're not done yet.
Mayor Lightfoot is now fighting for a pay equity audit of the city and an expansion of Paid Parental Leave for city of Chicago employees — which would give working parents the flexibility they need to be with their children during critical periods, while maintaining steady income and job security.
We need your support in this fight. Will you sign on here to become a Citizen Co-Sponsor of Mayor Lightfoot's effort to expand paid parental leave for city employees?
Thank you!
