We Caught Them Off Guard
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster recently vetoed an earmark in the state’s budget for a $25 million quantum computer. In their fight to sustain that veto and kill the earmark, the South Carolina Freedom Caucus (SCFC) asked what the computer was for. Who requested it? Which department is going to use it? These are basic questions that deserved to be asked when government decides to spend tax dollars.
But, it turns out, nobody could give them a straight answer. The SCFC caught leadership and the big spenders off guard. Check out this radio interview ([link removed]) with SCFC Chairman Adam Morgan to hear the whole story.
This is the sort of wasteful spending that the South Carolina Freedom Caucus is trying to expose and eliminate. And they’re just getting started.
Evan Newman, our state director in the Palmetto State, recently wrote this Letter to the Editor:
“Republicans in South Carolina have a supermajority in both chambers and in all statewide Constitutional Offices. Yet, year after year, we are ranked as the most liberal Republican state in the country. Thankfully, South Carolina is now one of many states that has launched a Freedom Caucus, a Caucus composed of the most conservative legislators in the House. Just this past Tuesday, lawmakers went back to Columbia to deal with the Governor’s vetoes for the budget. The SC Freedom Caucus stood up for limited government by fighting to sustain many of these vetoes. They fought against things like giving $500,000 to a horse race, $300,000 to a food and wine festival, and $25,000,000 to purchase a quantum computer. The Freedom Caucus fought to protect your hard-earned tax dollars when others wouldn’t. I believe this is just a small sign of things to come from this group of legislators.
With the establishment of the SC Freedom Caucus, citizens of South Carolina can expect real conservative reform, like a real tax cut, constitutional carry, a ban on abortions, promotion of school choice, and judicial reform. The 13 legislators that make up the caucus are at the tip of the spear in fighting for expansion of individual freedoms. This past election cycle, we saw freedom-loving candidates win across the state, many of whom are eager to join the Freedom Caucus.
While South Carolina has lagged behind other states in producing conservative reform for years, there is now reason to be excited for the future. I am confident that the SC Freedom Caucus will grow and will fight to make our state better, and to push South Carolina elected officials to not just be conservative on the campaign trail, but conservative in the Statehouse, too."
