The United States Supreme Court’s devastating decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is an assault on women’s rights, human rights, and democracy that will have a damaging impact around the world. And, as Open Society Foundations founder and chair George Soros says, this decision is just “part of a carefully laid plan to turn the U.S. into a repressive regime.”

In a new piece in Project Syndicate, George Soros argues that the threat to U.S. democracy is greatest from the enemies at home—including the far-right majority in the U.S. Supreme Court. The extremists on the U.S. Supreme Court are undermining not only human rights but also the rights to vote and participate fully in democracy.

While the global threats to democracy remain, the Roe v. Wade decision defies the global wave in favor of liberalizing abortion rights. Open Society has been proud to invest in grassroots and national reproductive rights organizations who are fighting back at this moment, both in the United States and around the world. Now more than ever, we must stand with them to reject further attempts to deny and take away long-established human rights.

At last week’s meeting of the Group of 7, the world’s richest countries failed to see the ripple effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and pledged less than a quarter of what the World Food Programme needs to help stave off a catastrophic food crisis. In the New York Times, Open Society President Mark Malloch-Brown makes the case for big action to address the world’s interconnected food, fuel, and debt crises being intensified by the war in Ukraine.
