After every high-profile police shooting where a cop didn’t get indicted or convicted, our board member Jesse Williams and I would get together and ask: how did this cop get off?

We knew we weren’t alone. Seeing Black People gather outside of courthouses or prosecutors' offices and repeatedly not get the accountability they deserved made us want to clearly answer the question of how this happens.  

Today we launch the final video in the “How Cops Get Off” series—"The Law". It breaks down the laws that shield cops from accountability like qualified immunity, which lets cops walk if the exact misconduct has never been ruled unlawful in another case. Cops can claim that they didn’t know their conduct was against the law. If one piece of the story was different in prior cases, cops go free.

The “How Cops Get Off” series is an incredible tool to keep pushing us to think about public safety in radically different ways. It shows that the system we have been told exists to protect us is in fact designed to protect cops and harm Black and Brown communities. 

With the release of the last video in our series, “The Law”, we hope that you and members of your community have a better understanding of how cops are protected by our culture, laws, institutions, and people who run them, and why cops go free. 

Ultimately, we know that the only way to stop police violence is to make significant public investments in people—not police. That’s why we’re supporting grassroots movements in communities of color that challenge racial criminalization and call for genuine police accountability
