Friend,
Mireya and Amina here, John’s daughters. We feel angry and betrayed that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, leaving us with fewer rights than our mother had when she was our age. We know you are upset too.
We’re very grateful to live in a state that has codified this right to choose, but our hearts break for those living in states with trigger laws and regressive state legislatures that are actively stripping so many women of their basic freedom to control their own bodies. What’s more, women of color, low-income families, LGBTQ+ folks, and survivors of sexual violence are most likely to be affected.
Our dad has always taught us to always take an opportunity to do good, and it’s clear that we all need to step up and demand change. Doing this may look different for everyone, and whether you can take to the streets to protest, donate to abortion access organizations, or volunteer for pro-choice Democratic candidates, any action you can take today makes a difference in shaping a more just and equitable future.
We are so proud of our dad and his running mate Michelle Siri for not only leading the fight to make Maryland a national safe haven for abortion seekers, but also for prioritizing women’s issues, from economic dignity to equal employment protections to universal Pre-K and paid family leave long before the reversal of Roe.
But, they can’t do this work alone and they are counting on all of us to channel our frustration and disappointment with the current system into real, tangible actions and change. Will you step up now to support our dad’s Pro-Choice Maryland Action endorsed campaign by signing up to volunteer today?
