Democrats have the majorities in Congress right now (and the support of the American people) to pass urgently-needed, transformative legislation. But we're being hindered by an outdated parliamentary rule: the Senate filibuster.

Multiple bills that LBR was proud to help pass out of the House — including legislation that would federally protect abortion rights — have died in the Senate, all because 41 Republican Senators can deny a vote to anything they dislike. We need to send the message that the American people are demanding action.

Our fundamental rights are being chipped away by unelected right-wing judges. Families need more aid for healthcare, education, and accessing public transit. Republican-run states are restricting voting rights and taking dangerous steps that threaten the foundations of our democracy. And our most vulnerable communities are increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change.

We have the power to address all of these pressing issues in Congress — but we can't as long as the filibuster remains in place.

There are moments for compromise. But right now, we face historic challenges, and far too few Republicans have shown that they are willing to put country over party. So it's time to act — and it doesn't matter if our bills get 51 or 100 votes in the U.S. Senate, so long as they reach President Biden's desk.
