John,
Since Roe was overturned last month, you’ve probably been hearing all sorts of arguments and stories in defense of abortion from genuinely concerned individuals who want to see women given the best care possible.
These people might even consider themselves pro-life, but they have been told that not having access to abortion means not having access to pregnancy-related procedures that are sometimes essential to saving the life of the mother - such as in cases of ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage.
Whether or not we have personal experience with these pregnancy-related concerns, the conversations surrounding them can be very challenging. I want to break these down a bit for you - and share a few resources that will equip you in spreading the truth online and in person.
Ectopic Pregnancy
One of the most common scenarios being used to say we “need” abortion is ectopic pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancies can be life-threatening to the mother if untreated.
If abortion is not available in a woman’s state, will she have access to the necessary treatment for ectopic pregnancy?
The answer is YES.
Abortion is the intentional killing of a preborn child. Treating an ectopic pregnancy will tragically always lead to the child’s death, but the treatment does not directly or intentionally harm the child. In an ectopic pregnancy, the newly created child is lodged in her mother’s fallopian tube rather than her uterus. This is a hostile environment for the child and for the mother. By removing the child from that environment, the intention of the treatment is not to directly kill the child, so it is not abortion.
Miscarriage Treatment
Likewise, abortion laws have no impact on miscarriage treatment. In the case of miscarriage, the child has sadly already died, either naturally or of unknown causes. If the mother’s body needs assistance in delivering the child’s body, that procedure is not abortion. And mothers will still have access to that procedure.
