Folks, in our latest Civics for the Culture episode, host Chelsey Hall is back to finish the lesson about the history of our democracy.

This time around, in Part Two of this series, Chelsey talks us through a brief, recent history of voting rights in America from the early 2000s to present day.

As we reflect on what voting rights have looked like in our country, it’s hard to ignore that while we’ve made so much progress — so many things remain the same. There are still bad actors working to undo much of what we’ve accomplished. And it’s never been more important to come together and exercise our right to vote.

This series is a part of our voter education program designed to give young people of color the resources they need to make their voices heard at the ballot box. Click here to watch our new Civics for the Culture episode and support voter education programs like this one. [[link removed]]

After Black and brown voters turned out in historic numbers in 2020, we’ve seen almost every state attempt to pass anti-voter legislation, ranging from closing polling locations to purging voter rolls. But we’re here to remind you that despite this, voting is still the most powerful tool that we have as Americans.

And democracy is not a spectator sport.

While some states continue to introduce oppressive voter laws making it harder for Black and brown people to cast their ballots, on the other side of the coin there are states leading the charge for voting rights . States like California and Oregon have already passed automatic voter registration, and in places like Washington and Maine there is Election Day voter registration, allowing people to cast their ballot on the same day.

The work we’re doing is not in vain.

By voting, we’re sending a message that we want to make a more perfect union for generations to come. If you’re committed to this work and our mission, please chip in anything you can to fund our voter education programs ahead of the November midterm elections. [[link removed]]
