Kennedy Institute Newsletter | SUMMER 2022
FROM THE INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Hello friends,

As Americans celebrated the Independence Day holiday earlier this week, we hope you were able to enjoy time with family and friends and take a moment to reflect on the ideals of our nation and what freedom means to you. Our country’s founders recognized that democracy is not an easy thing to nurture, nor guaranteed to succeed, but now, as then, the American project is ongoing.

Engaged citizenship, participation, and consensus are key to our nation’s development and progress. They are the values the Kennedy Institute puts forth every day through our educational offerings, public affairs programs, and our new Senate Project debate series. That is why, even during times of uncertainty, our work to inspire the next generation of leaders is more important than ever.

The Kennedy Institute serves as a resource in the work to build bipartisan bridges in our country and we invite you to join us through participation in our programs, and through your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Sue Heilman
Interim Executive Director

Introducing The Senate Project

On June 13, the Kennedy Institute was proud to host the first Senate Project debate, featuring Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Streamed by Fox Nation and moderated by Bret Baier, the senators discussed the economy, and much of the conversation focused on issues that are top-of-mind for voters such as gas prices, inflation, healthcare, Social Security, immigration, and guns.

The Senate Project is a new partnership between the Kennedy Institute, the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation, and the Bipartisan Policy Center, designed to reintroduce the culture of seeking common ground and consensus that has been the essence of the Senate since 1789. The goal of the Senate Project is to inspire policymakers to not only make the case for their points of view, but to then work towards the example set by Senator Ted Kennedy and Senator Orrin Hatch for bipartisan bridge-building.

For the Kennedy Institute, The Senate Project brought our one-of-a-kind replica of the Senate Chamber back into the national spotlight and highlighted our values of bipartisanship, civil discourse, and inspiring the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of their communities.

On Thursday, June 23, the Kennedy Institute, the John & Pat Hume Foundation, and the Consulate General of Ireland in Boston hosted a conversation commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first meeting between Senator Edward M. Kennedy and John Hume, and its profound impact on finding a path to peace in Northern Ireland. The event featured a panel of ambassadors and elected officials, and explored how the legacy of this powerful relationship still resonates today.

Moderated by Dr. Catherine Shannon, the panel featured Ambassador Daniel Mulhall, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States; Ambassador Nancy Soderberg, former United States representative to the United Nations; Dr. Sean Farren, Chair of the John & Pat Hume Foundation for Peaceful Change and Reconciliation; Aidan Hume, son of the late John Hume, Nobel Peace Laureate; and Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Board member of the Kennedy Institute. The conversation centered on the similarities between the two men that led to their extended friendship and commitment towards peace in Northern Ireland. Learn more and view a recording of the event
