Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips were murdered for their work to protect the Amazon rainforest. They are just the latest martyrs in a long line of forest guardians – some known and many unknown to the outside world – who were targeted by economic and political interests that would destroy the whole rainforest for a profit.
We join their families, colleagues, and local Indigenous counterparts in mourning their horrific deaths. And now is the time to call for justice in not only their case, but that of the Indigenous communities they were accompanying.
This was a crime foretold. Local Indigenous federation UNIVAJA had been alerting Brazilian authorities of the danger for months, including details of increasing death threats against Bruno and Indigenous leaders like Beto Marubo.
After their disappearance, a number of U.S. congresspeople spoke out publicly on social media to encourage the search for the two men. Now, Representatives Raúl Grijalva (Arizona) and Susan Wild (Pennsylvania) are championing a group letter to the U.S. State Department recommending actions for justice and accountability, and for the protection of the local Indigenous peoples who continue to be at grave risk.
Take action to encourage your congressperson to add their voice to the global outcry for justice.
