** Rising Waters: ELPC Report Shows Toxic Risks to Lake Michigan
------------------------------------------------------------
Climate change is fueling more extreme Lake Michigan water levels, along with stronger winds and heavier storms. In a new report, ELPC identified twelve areas in four states where turbulent waters could impact industrial facilities, contaminated sites, and communities along Lake Michigan. Local communities have already spent $878 million in the past two years repairing from extreme weather damages. Now is the time to prepare for additional risks ahead.

ELPC is meeting with local community groups and policymakers across the region to highlight vulnerable sites and identify solutions to hazards such as coal ash, radioactive waste, residential flooding, and sewage contamination. We need to rethink Lake Michigan’s shoreline infrastructure to adapt to climate change and protect public health throughout the region.

** Supreme Court Weakens EPA’s Ability to Take Climate Action ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

In West Virginia V. EPA, the Supreme Court limited the EPA’s ability to regulate greenhouse gases and other dangerous air pollutants. With this ruling, the Court is creating unnecessary barriers to taking climate action and gives polluters another tool to delay and stall sensible environmental and public health standards designed to protect healthy clean air and safe clean water. ELPC will continue to fight for solutions at every level of government.

** Win for Clean Energy: Michigan Utility Will be Coal-Free by 2025, Shift to Solar ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a settlement agreement between Consumers Energy and advocates, including ELPC. Consumers will close all three of its coal-fired units ([link removed]) , accelerate battery storage, and add nearly 8,000 MW of solar generation in the coming years. The utility estimates customers could save an estimated $600 million through 2040. That is good news for public health, the economy, and the environment.

** Better Planning Needed for a More Sustainable, Equitable Electricity Grid ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

The grid is changing to match new needs and technology, and the stakes are high for consumers, with affordability, reliability, and sustainability on the line. Grid planning at the state level offers an opportunity for previously ignored voices to be heard and to actively shape and contribute to electric industry policy choices that will have far-reaching effects. Read our latest blog about how ELPC is pushing for more transparency and inclusive grid planning in the Midwest.
