Our Founders cautioned us about the circumstances in which we find ourselves today. James Madison – the architect of the Constitution – warned that a President might “betray his trust to foreign powers…which might prove fatal to the republic.” Similarly, Gouverneur Morris, feared that a President “may be bribed by a greater interest to betray his trust.”

They describe the current occupant of the White House.

Throughout his time in office, Donald Trump has engaged in behavior that subverts our democratic values and jeopardizes our elections.

His reckless decision – to force a foreign power to announce the investigation of his political rival in exchange for a vital White House meeting and military aid – is a betrayal of our Constitution and everything our Founders fought for.

He has left us with no choice but to rein in on his abuses of power, blatant bribery and culture of corruption.

At the same time, we will continue to make meaningful progress For the People.

For a free, fair, and open internet, we passed the Save The Internet Act to restore vital Net Neutrality protections. For expanding freedom and ending discrimination against LGBTQ Americans, we passed the historic Equality Act. For embracing our immigrant brothers and sisters, we passed the Dream and Promise Act.

For a cleaner government – we passed the For The People Act to reduce the role of money in politics, strengthen voting rights, and clean up corruption in Washington. For the well-being of women, we passed the Paycheck Fairness Act – equal pay for equal work.

For the survival of our planet, we passed the Climate Action Now Act. For the success of hard-working men and women, we passed the Raise The Wage Act to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour – a raise for 33 million Americans, including 20 million women.

For the safety of our communities, we passed commonsense, bipartisan gun violence prevention bills to establish universal background checks. To protect our elections and strengthen our defenses against foreign attacks, we passed the SHIELD Act. And, we will level the playing field for American patients and taxpayers by lowering the cost of prescription drugs.

The Grim Reaper Mitch McConnell refuses to take action and ignores the will of the people, however.

Our fight For the People is one we cannot win alone. I need you. We need you. And this country needs you now more than ever. The grassroots organizing and engagement less than one year out are vital to victory in 2020. Keep knocking on doors. Continue registering people to vote. Mail those post cards. Send text messages. Show up at rallies holding Republicans accountable. Participate in phonebanks. Make your voice heard and inspire others to get involved.

When Benjamin Franklin came out of Independence Hall on September 17, 1787 after our Constitution was adopted, people asked him: What do we have—a monarchy or a republic?

He said: “A republic, if you can keep it.” Indeed, we have a responsibility to keep and protect it – for the children.

America cannot afford another four years of a Trump Republican Presidency. Together, we will expand our House Majority, take back the Senate, elect a Democratic President of the United States, and take back state legislatures and governorships. Together, we will honor the vows of our Founders, the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, and the aspirations of our children.
