John, we need to talk about Christian Nationalism.

According to the AP, Pennsylvania is host to “the most prominent example this election cycle of what some observers call a surge of Christian nationalism.” That’s a big deal, given its recent prominence in everything from the January 6 attack to the Supreme Court’s rulings gutting the separation of church and state.

Christian Nationalism is a far-right movement that seeks to have the government impose conservative Christianity on secular society in its policies and laws.

John, that runs directly counter to our very democracy. If they get their way, this will be our last remotely free and fair election. But we can keep them out of power by getting Black, brown, and young voters registered and out to the polls. Will you chip in $10 today to help us mobilize these historically disenfranchised communities?

While many Christian Nationalists still try to avoid the title, others are done being quiet about it. One prominent Christian Nationalist, as reported by Newsweek on June 3rd, had this to say: “Nationalism is a good thing . . . we should be proud of nationalism . . . and, lastly, we should be most proud of Christianity. So if Christian nationalism is something to be scared of, they’re lying to you.”

Yet, as reported by the Washington Post on June 28th, another prominent Christian Nationalist recently went viral saying they are “tired of this separation of church and state junk,” and they believe “the church is supposed to direct the government.”

For these extremists, that doesn’t mean directing the government to provide for the poor or any other humanitarian religious goals — it means things like outright theocracy, persecuting the LGBTQ+ community, and forced pregnancy.

John, we should all be scared by these extremists’ brazen attempts to violently overturn elections that don’t go their way, destroy the separation of church and state, and force the rest of us to live by their very particular set of values. Much to their chagrin, we still live in a democracy, where we have the power to vote our own values. Will you invest $10 in defending our democracy?
