Political scientists are sure: Democrats are doomed in the upcoming midterms.
Republicans seem to believe that they’ve got things in the bag, and are acting like they’ve already won. But zero votes have been cast―and there are reasons to believe that this time is different. I’m going to walk you through why I don’t believe that we’re doomed, but first, I’d like to ask you to make a donation of $5 or more to become a member of Social Security Works.
Republicans are behaving as if the votes have already been cast, and they won. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s terrible decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Republicans have called for national abortion bans―something that doesn’t poll above 30% in any state of the union.
Senator Rick Scott, who chairs the Republican effort to take the Senate, released a plan that was described by Mitch McConnell as “sunsetting Social Security and Medicare in 5 years.” Nobody wants that either.
And Republicans have universally opposed popular positions like expanding Social Security, giving Medicare the same power that the VA has to negotiate lower prescription drug costs, and giving Medicare recipients dental, vision, and hearing care. Oh, and they’ve also sided with the insurrectionists throughout the January 6th committee investigations.
There are exceptions to partisan gravity in the midterms. The President’s party has picked up seats in the House twice in the last 30 years―that’s more times than Republicans have won the popular vote for President in the same period.
In 1998, the Republican House of Representatives tried to throw President Bill Clinton out of office after he won an overwhelming electoral victory.
And in 2002, George W. Bush’s Republicans picked up seats by distorting Democratic positions and running ads allying them with 9/11 attackers.
Those years defied the odds, and 2022 can too. Donald Trump whipped up a violent mob to stop President Biden from taking office, and he had help from people who are on the ballot now. Democrats don’t have to do any distorting to make it clear that Republicans are extremists who side with terrorists who tried to overthrow the government.
Republicans believe that they are insulated from the public’s rejection of their policies―so they’ve come right out and vowed to destroy Social Security and Medicare. Together, we will prove them wrong.
