If you’re a member, keep an eye out for a physical copy of the scorecard in your mailbox soon!

The Conservation Scorecard is your eyes on the Capitol. We use it to grade how Gov. Evers and the legislature did – or didn’t – prioritize conservation issues during the 2021-2022 legislative session. Most importantly, it’s your resource for voting in the August 9 primary and November 8 general election. 

Missed opportunities, attacks on our freedom to vote, and toxic extremism dominated the legislative session that seemed more like a reality TV show at times than actual reality.

Time and time again, Speaker Robin Vos and his extremist, gerrymandered Republican majority stopped legislation from passing which would improve our health and environment. The 2021-2022 session proved it again – the climate crisis is also a democracy crisis.

Luckily, Wisconsin has Gov. Tony Evers and other courageous, creative legislators who protect against the worst impulses of anti-conservation majorities and make real progress on conservation and democracy issues.

The Conservation Honor Roll highlights Wisconsin’s greatest champions. These decision makers put forth extra effort to protect our air, water, land, and democracy. Gov. Tony Evers vetoed every anti-voter bill that made its way to his desk and used executive order to advance clean energy and clean water issues. Attorney General Josh Kaul protected our environment and freedom to vote in the courts. Sen. Jeff Smith was a leader in the fight against PFAS contamination, and in the assembly, Rep. Francesca Hong and Rep. Kristina Shelton fought for equity, clean energy, and clean water.

Some decision-makers go to extraordinary lengths to jeopardize Wisconsin's natural resources and democracy. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has thrown away over a million taxpayer dollars on a sham election review – attacking our freedom to vote and putting our election workers in danger. Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu was derelict in doing one of the important parts of his job when he refused to take up Gov. Evers’ appointees, a move that has had significant implications for the Natural Resources Board. Sen. Eric Wimberger and Rep. Elijah Behnke represent two of the most PFAS-contaminated communities in the United States and have done little to nothing to address the problem.

To make progress that protects our natural places, our urban environments, our democracy, and our freedom, we must vote. When you show up to cast your ballot, you choose the leaders who represent you. Use the Conservation Scorecard to choose your representatives when you vote this fall.
