I want to inform you of what is happening here in Akron, Ohio, John.
On June 28, a Black man, Jayland Walker, was killed at the hands of eight police officers. These police officers released ninety shots during the altercation. At this very moment, the City of Akron and the Akron Police Department are conducting an investigation into what occurred that would cause so much violence against one man.
I join each and every one of you in the Akron community as we mourn this tragic loss. Jayland Walker was revered as a neighbor, brother, and nephew to so many.
I know many are brokenhearted to learn of this loss. And while I share the same sense of sorrow with you all, I am also gravely concerned.
For far too long, Black communities have been the victim of not just police violence, but also faulty police investigations into the events that caused their death. I refuse to let that happen here.
That’s why on Friday, I called upon the Department of Justice to monitor this investigation into Mr. Walker’s death to make sure the investigation is fair and just – and as of this weekend, they have accepted our calls for oversight. We owe it to his family, and the people of Akron, to uncover the truth of this tragic event, and I thank the Dept. of Justice for seeing the importance of this as well.
If we want to change this epidemic of unarmed Black men and women being killed at the hands of police, then we need accountability. Our communities need to know our police department is being transparent and neutral in this investigation. We need to know that we will be served the truth of what happened, not just a story that protects the police department. This is the only way to rebuild trust between our community and law enforcement agencies.
I want you to know that as your Congresswoman, I am doing everything in my power to ensure a thorough investigation into this matter. I will continue every day to put pressure on officials until our communities know the whole truth. And as we await the results of the investigation, know that I am here for each and every one of you.
Thank you,
Shontel
