Recently, I asked my three oldest kids (Hannah, Ashton & Blitz) why we celebrate the Fourth of July?
They said, "Because we got our freedom from Great Britain."
I then asked a question, "Why did we want freedom from Great Britain?"
They then shouted in chorus, "NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!"
I said, "That's right... kind of." Then, I gave my kids a short history of our great country.
My three kids gave the answer we have all been taught.
We have been taught that our ancestors came over to America in search of gold and that they separated from Great Britain over taxes. This is called an economic approach to history.
While this is partially true, there is much more that we have not been taught.
Did you know there are actually twenty-seven reasons listed in the Declaration of Independence as to why our Founders decided it was necessary to fight a war for Independence?
"No taxation without representation" was actually grievece seventeen of the twenty-seven. What is listed eleven times is "Representative Abuse", which is elite rulers infringing upon the God-given rights that are granted to individuals created in the image of God (sounds very similar to today).
Our separation from Great Britain was not just for financial reasons but also biblical reasons. It is the same with our ancestors and their desire to come to America in the first place.
In 1504, Christopher Columbus said "I was led of the Holy Spirit to carry the message of the Gospel to undiscovered lands."
In the Mayflower Compact it is stated that they had come to America for "the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith."
The original thirteen colonies had charters that presented why they decided to form these new colonies.
The Virginia Charter states that the colony of Virginia was formed for the right of people to live in "Christian peace" and instruct the people to "Propagate the Christian religion to such people who yet live in ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God."
The Delaware Charter states that the colony of Delaware was formed "To further propagate the Holy Gospel."
To say that the reason our ancestors came to America was exclusively in search for riches and gold (an economic approach to history) is not only wrong but historically dishonest.
America was formed to be a Christian nation with a divine purpose.
Sunday at Sheridan.Church, I delivered a message about the UNTOLD history of America's Christian foundation.
