Boris Johnson resigns
Time for Conservatives to elect a leader who will repair his damage
During his tenure, Johnson has degraded every standard, undermined every institution and discredited the UK at every opportunity and after today's stampede of long-overdue resignations, his sinking ship has at last hit the sea bed.
I'm not sad to see him go, I'm angry that it's taken this long. I'm angry at all the missed opportunities, the people drowning in the cost of living crisis, the way he has steered our country away from our closest allies in Europe and I am angry our democracy and political system have been tarnished so very badly.
We fought him every step of the way. Together, we forced him to make changes to the antidemocratic Elections Bill and Policing Bill. Together, we have worked to make the case for a better, closer relationship with Europe - most recently getting him to accept the need for more visas for EU workers. And together, we will keep standing against the nativism, corruption and contempt for democracy that Johnson represents.
John, I need to ask you to make a monthly donation to the campaign fund. Thousands of Best for Britain supporters already support the campaign with donations each month and we must be prepared to win the battles that come next.
Johnson's successor must change tack. The Conservative Party must elect a leader the UK can trust both to tell the truth and to repair the damage wrought by Boris Johnson both at home and abroad. The people of the UK cannot wait. People are facing hardship right now, businesses are struggling to trade with the EU right now, voters are losing faith with democracy right now.
What I want - what Best for Britain will always work for - is for the UK to have the closest possible relationship with the EU, for a more open and compassionate immigration system, for the ties that bind us to our friends around the world to be truly recognised as vital to the future of our country and for better, fairer, uncorrupted democracy in our own land.

What comes next is a leadership election, a new Prime Minister in the Autumn and, hopefully, a change of direction for the country.
