Friend,

One day.

After Rosa Parks was found guilty of not yielding her seat to a white passenger, civil rights leaders in Montgomery planned a one-day boycott of city buses. The boycott was supposed to begin and end 64 years ago today. But, at the urging of Martin Luther King, Jr. and other black leaders, it was extended a little bit longer. And then longer.

381 days later, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of four other women who had also refused to give up their seats on Montgomery buses. After more than a year, the boycott ended, and those fighting for equal rights celebrated a major victory.

There wasn’t a clear beginning to the Civil Rights movement. It built, one action and one day at a time. Because of the grit and determination of normal people – seamstresses, preachers, farmers, and teachers – we made incredible strides and saw the spirit of unity and equality prevail.
But, friends, there also hasn’t been a clear end to the movement. There won’t be. There are still injustices in our country and state. When black women face the worst health outcomes after childbirth, when clean water and sanitation are lacking in communities of color, and when the Voting Rights Act is being gutted year by year, we have to stand up together and use all the resolve and fight we have in us.

We have to keep standing up for each other. We have to keep learning from our past. We have to elect leaders who are part of the fight. And we must honor the heroes who had everything to lose and put it all on the line.

Please pledge to vote today and check your voter registration. There is too much on the line in this election – but we know that if we stand together as One Alabama, we will continue to triumph over division. [[link removed]]

Doug Jones
