The start of summer traditionally means the end of the school year and the beginning of a season of outdoor recreation and fun.
But unfortunately, now it also means more extreme weather events. More than a year after Oregonians suffered through a deadly record-setting heat dome, we're experiencing extreme weather across the country again.
This year we've already seen dangerous wildfires in New Mexico and massive flooding in Montana and Wyoming — enough to close down Yellowstone National Park. Half a million households lost power during violent thunderstorms in the Midwest. And deadly heat waves and droughts are sweeping through the nation.
We need solutions now.
We are seeing the consequences of years of fossil fuel pollution and climate inaction. And these disasters disproportionately affect those living in poverty and communities of color.
Recently President Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to increase the production of clean energy technologies, including solar and heat pumps. This is key to reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, but we need more.
In Congress, I'm fighting for more bold climate action to combat climate change and hold fossil fuel companies accountable.
I joined more than 170 House Democrats on a letter to President Biden urging him to include climate measures that already passed in the House in any reconciliation package before the August recess.
To address climate change, droughts, and wildfires, we need robust climate legislation.
Together, I know we can do it.
Thank you for standing with me,
