It is absolutely terrifying that Illinoisans who set out to celebrate our Independence Day and enjoy Highland Park’s time-honored Fourth of July parade suddenly found themselves running for their lives. At least seven of them never made it home.

The last time I heard a weapon of that capacity firing that rapidly on the Fourth of July was in Iraq, and I never thought I would hear it on American soil.

My heart goes out to the families who will never see their loved ones again. I join the entire Highland Park community in grieving their losses and wishing swift recoveries for the victims who survived.

And while they recover from this horrific act of gun violence, there is action we can take as a community to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.

Last month, Congress proved that bipartisan compromises on gun safety are possible. However, this tragedy shows that we can’t stop there. We have to do more to keep our communities safe. We have to pass additional commonsense reforms that wide majorities of Americans are crying out for — that at least seven Illinoisans can no longer cry out for.

We need to pass an assault weapons ban.

We know an assault weapons ban could go a long way to help save lives because when our last ban was allowed to expire, mass shootings in this country tripled. It’s time we put an end to this. Will you join me?

Add your name and join me if you agree it’s time for Congress to pass an assault weapons ban. It’s time to get these dangerous weapons off our streets and save lives.

People are sick and tired of waking up to news about another mass shooting and reading about gun violence in their communities.

Every community deserves to be safe from senseless gun violence.

Thank you for making your voice heard today,

Tammy
