Marc Elias is right, John: If we’re going to protect our democracy, we must bring an end to extreme GOP gerrymandering.

The lesson is clear. Now is the time for Democrats to intensify their focus on redistricting, not turn away. Groups like the National Democratic Redistricting Committee do not dissolve at the end of 2022; rather, they continue to litigate for fair maps because they know the importance of a sustained fight. But they need our help. In order to continue to send Democrats who will fight for our democracy in Congress, we must ensure there are fair districts that Democrats can win — not just this year, but for the next decade and decades to come. — Marc Elias in Democracy Docket
PITCH IN TO KEEP UP THE FIGHT

All over the country, Republicans have manipulated the maps to win unearned majorities, and now they’re trying to roll back abortion rights, voting rights, and LGBTQ rights, all while blocking progress on every issue under the sun.

The good news is the situation right now is not as bad as it was in the previous decade. Since the NDRC’s launch in 2017, we’ve helped break GOP supermajorities in state legislative chambers, flip chambers outright, and elect Democratic governors whose veto pens serve as a xxxxxx against manipulated maps.

But even though the most recent redistricting process has nominally ended, our fight isn’t over. There are still pending court cases that could affect maps later this decade, and the GOP is becoming more and more extreme every day, including trying to elect state supreme court candidates they think will rubber stamp gerrymandered maps.

So it’s safe to say we can’t rest on our laurels now. That’s why the NDRC’s latest strategy includes targeting elections that will be critical to the future of our democracy in 17 states this November, from state legislative races to governor’s races to state supreme court races and more.

We’re doing the hard, on-the-ground work it takes to defend our democracy every single day — but we’re counting on your support to do it. Will you pitch in anything you can right now to help us keep up the fight to end GOP gerrymandering?

Thanks,

Team NDRC
