By Dec. 26, Tell USDA to Restore Transparency and Accountability

Dear John,

In the last two years, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has significantly cut back on its enforcement of both the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and the Horse Protection Act (HPA). At the same time, the department has reduced transparency by purging its online database of licensee information, followed by anemic efforts to repost some of the records. Now the USDA is proposing more changes in the kinds of information it will make available to the public.

The public has a right to access this information to be able to monitor the AWA and HPA compliance of commercial operations such as puppy mills, horse trainers, and roadside zoos that do business with the public.

What You Can Do
Please submit comments to the USDA on or before the December 26 deadline, urging the department to allow greater public access to information about public commercial enterprises in the interest of transparency and accountability. (Note: When you submit comments through AWI's website, your name and comments will be publicly viewable on the official comment page at Regulations.gov.) You may also submit your comments directly at [link removed] ([link removed]), where you may decline to provide your contact information.

Please be sure to share our "Dear Humanitarian" eAlert with family, friends, and co-workers, and encourage them to take action, too. As always, thank you very much for your help!

Sincerely,

Cathy Liss
President
