When the world starts to look really bleak, and it feels like I can’t make a difference no matter what I do, there’s a piece of inspiration that I look to that I always carry with me. After the 2016 election, I got a tattoo on my arm in my mother’s handwriting that reads: If not now, when? It’s my constant reminder that our friends, our family, our communities are all we have. If I want them to thrive, not just survive, I have to fight for them. And I have to do it now. In 2020, research showed that writing a voter a letter was one of the most effective ways to turn someone out to vote from home. Better than sending a text or making a call. In the 2022 midterms, when voters are less likely to turn out, your letters can have an even greater impact. Sending a letter with a heartfelt message telling voters what’s at stake in this election can do so much to encourage them to participate in our democracy. And we’re going to need all the help we can get at the ballot box this year. A White House controlled by Donald Trump, a Senate controlled by Mitch McConnell, and state houses controlled by right-wingers who don’t care about our safety or freedoms helped get us to this moment. Now, Trump Republicans are trying to take over election administration offices like Secretary of State to stop us from fighting back. Voting to keep power out of their hands at the local, state, and federal level is one of the best things we can do to make sure our friends, families, and communities are protected from a rogue Court. Ensuring the right elected officials win—at every level of the ballot—is what it will take to protect our fundamental freedoms. Sign up to adopt unlikely voters to make sure they cast their ballots in the midterms. |
