Our 1,000 Doors of Summer effort is well under way. Just knocked another hundred.

Over the years, I’ve knocked on thousands and thousands of doors. You learn all kinds of things when you show up on people’s doorstep.

You also detect certain patterns. Lemme tell you about one.

That way it works is that I’ve got a list of doors to knock. It includes Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. I want to make sure we’re hearing from everyone.

But that means I don’t end up knocking every door on the street. Maybe we’ll do half or a third on every street.

However, I have something I call The Subaru Exception.

It’s pretty simple: If there’s a Subaru in the driveway, I knock the door, even if it’s not on my list.

Why? Because in my experience, people who own Subarus are just friendly. That’s all.

Same with people who have hand-painted front doors. Those are all getting a knock.

Same with people who have multiple bird feeders, or homemade yard art, or — I swear — have painted any part of their house purple. Those are all Subaru Exceptions.

You can’t make this stuff up, folks. This is what you learn when you’ve spent years knocking doors.

Learning directly from your constituents is the best way to serve. That’s why I’m doing this. And the conversations I’m having are great: climate change, gun violence, affordable housing, gerrymandering, political division, noisy neighbors, water pressure issues, flood mitigation — people have a lot to say, and my first job is to listen.
