Dear John,
The New York Times laid it out plainly in a recent article: If young voters remain as disengaged as they are right now, Democrats are going to get clobbered in November.
According to exit polls, explosive turnouts of 18- to 29-year-olds were the key to 2020 Democrat wins in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia — but these same young voters aren’t excited about going to the polls this year.
Considering the Supreme Court’s recent wave of extremist decisions, human rights and the future of our planet literally hang in the balance of the upcoming midterms. We have to be talking to young voters every day. But the media isn’t reaching them — most outlets aren’t connecting with young people on the social media they use.
Now, I’m not a techie by any means — I keep asking my team about “the algorithm” as if there is one magic code controlling all of the internet. (BTW, they tell me I should be saying “the algorithmS!”)
That’s why I’ve helped to build a team of sharp, young, tech-savvy minds that know how to make the most out of every platform. And to then do it again, and again, as the algorithms constantly change. And we’ve just expanded our reach to Snapchat and TikTok, where we are connecting with hundreds of thousands more potential voters.
To reach the youth voters we need to win in November, we need to expand our social media reach on TikTok, Snapchat, and beyond. Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action today?
Snapchat has 319 million daily users, more than 80% under the age of 35. The social media platform reaches more young people than TikTok and Twitter combined.
It’s a no-brainer that Snapchat is where we need to go to reach young voters, but a Pew Research Center Survey showed that fewer than 2% of journalists are on Snapchat or TikTok or other social media platforms on which youth voters spend their time.
You know who is reaching young people on Snapchat? Ben Shapiro. The extreme right-wing pundit already has more than 1.6 million followers. There is just no progressive equivalent to his vitriol on the platform.
But Inequality Media Civic Action is gaining on Shapiro. In just the few weeks since we launched on Snapchat, we’ve grown our following exponentially. Not only are we getting more followers, but they are deeply engaging with and sharing our explainer videos — and every person who sees our videos is another mind opened and another vote potentially cast to defeat Republicans in November.
We have to strengthen our social media presence on Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to reach every possible youth voter before November. Your donation goes directly toward staffing our team and growing our reach.

Thanks for helping us get the truth out,
Robert Reich
