John,

On Independence Day, I was reminded that it is only through our continued involvement and advocacy that we can push for progress and guarantee equal rights for all. For many, it feels like we’ve taken steps back.

Given the events that took place yesterday, including the mass shooting in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, this sentiment is more salient than ever.

But I’ve also learned that we must recognize the progress we’ve made, even in times of anguish.

We took a step towards progress last week with the historic ascension of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. I am proud that my kids and grandkids will grow up seeing someone who looks like them serve on the nation’s highest court. And, there is still so much work to be done.

Freedom is something we must work for every day.

As President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, it is my mission to advocate for every member of our community until we can experience the justice and equality we all deserve.

I’m determined to do just that, and I hope you will join me in working every day to make our communities, and this nation, a better place.

Sincerely,

Shamann
