Hi John,

Yesterday as I walked in the Fourth of July parade on Bainbridge Island, I saw someone standing on a roof. My mind immediately flashed to the Highland Park Fourth of July shooting, where a shooter opened fire from a roof, murdering seven people and wounding dozens more.

I can only imagine the pain of the victims’ family members and the terror of the people running for cover.

We don’t have to live this way.

We can break free of the hold the NRA has over our politics. We can break free of the cowardice of politicians who offer thoughts and prayers while doing nothing.

We can do things like:

-Raise the age for buying a firearm to 21.
-Enact nationwide waiting periods for purchase of all firearms.
-Mandate universal background checks, including at gun shows.
-Provide full federal funding to modernize and optimize existing background check systems, and make them compatible across all 50 states.
-Increase funding for mental health services as part of Medicare for All, as over half of gun deaths are by suicide.

I will never cower before the gun lobby. I will fight for these reforms. I hope you’ll send me to Congress [[link removed]] to do that.
