Is it ever NOT the end of the world?

** Remember when every election didn't feel like the end of the world? Me either.
------------------------------------------------------------

I know that a lot of people were hesitant to celebrate Independence Day yesterday, and I get it. It's been a bad... couple of centuries for America. But July 4th is my favorite holiday and I celebrated with my usual fervor (a John Adams marathon and fireworks) because America has also had a great couple of centuries, and most of that greatness has been brought about by activists and random groups of people coming together to fight for a cause. And wow do we have a lot of causes to come together and fight for now.

I have spent my entire life trying to make this country better, and my entire life well aware of how wildly privileged this Black girl is in ways that I could only be in America. I have been to all 50 states- probably my biggest accomplishment- and I have seen how extraordinary beautiful this nation is, how good a surprising number of the people are, and how much delicious food we have that is specifically designed to kill you.

I often say that the only thing America is doing right is our National Parks, and that's mostly true, there really is nothing better on the entire planet than the National Parks and we should all thank a park ranger right now. But the other thing we are doing right, that we always do right, is our willingness to fight. Hard. Every day. We fight for civil rights, for women's rights, for voting rights, for LGTBQ rights, for immigration rights. We fight in small towns and big cities and at the National Mall and inside and outside of the Supreme Court. We fight when we're winning and we fight when we're losing. We are a nation that Fs up a lot. One could even argue that we F up more than the average nation. But we are also a nation that never stops trying to get it right. After National Parks and death defying diner food, that is my favorite thing about this country.

It will be a very cold day before I let anyone take my country, my ancestor's hard work, my pride in my history, or my awe at who we are and what we have done from me. I was watching The Janes when I remembered heroes are not born in good times, when everything is going right. Heroes are every day people who step up when everything in them is telling them to run. Heroes are the ones who fight. We are a nation of heroes. And now is our time to fight.

In 126 days we'll have our first chance to take that fight to the polls. I'm not giving up, and I hope you're not either.
