Supermarkets' single-use plastics soar

You can't have failed to notice that plastic packaging from UK supermarkets has risen to more than 900,000 tonnes a year – despite promises to cut down. Our new report Checking Out on Plastics II, which received wide coverage, revealed that seven of the top 10 supermarkets had increased the plastic packaging they use. Also alarming is the steep rise in sales of so-called ‘bags for life’, with millions buying them as a single-use option even though they contain far more plastic than conventional single-use carriers – 1.5 billion of them were sold in the past year.

A group of antiques traders which failed to quash the UK Ivory Act has been granted leave to appeal. A High Court Judge found for the Government and against the traders, who had argued the Ivory Act was contrary to EU law and infringed their rights.
