I am getting a lot of questions about the new law that took effect on July 1, authorizing the sale of food and beverage products containing limited amounts of hemp-derived THC. I've been leading the way on legalization in Minnesota, so I was proud to see my friend Rep. Heather Edelson's bill pass unanimously and get signed into law.

This morning, we held a press conference to help explain what the new law does and doesn't do.

As the chief author of a House bill to legalize adult-use cannabis in our state, there is still much work to do toward full legalization. As County Attorney, I will continue the work for sensible policy, fairness and equity that I've pushed as House Majority Leader and in my 16 years of public service.

Harsh penalties for cannabis have limited opportunity for many traditionally marginalized communities. The next step for Minnesota must be expungement programs for people who were convicted of non-violent cannabis crimes. And we must also move quickly to grant clemency to those serving time for non-violent cannabis offenses. No one should be sitting in jail for something this minor and unfairly enforced.

As County Attorney I will do what I can to advance both of these efforts and will use prosecutorial discretion to make sure that no one continues to suffer from the enforcement of outdated and subjectively enforced cannabis laws.
