Hi John.
I hope you and your family had a wonderful Fourth of July.
The Fourth is a time where we celebrate with fireworks, parades, and burgers – myself included. But what we’re really celebrating are our values. We’re a nation of innovators, and we have been since the first Independence Day.
But over the last few decades, we’ve lost jobs—lost entire industries—overseas. We’ve been reliant on goods made in other countries for far too long, and it’s been steadily eroding our competitive edge. Now it’s time to take that edge back by investing in the innovation and spirit that got us here and making more in America.
That’s why I’m leading negotiations a major bipartisan bill, along with Kansas Senator Jerry Moran, to stand up to China and support American manufacturers. Please click here to learn more about it in my new Op-Ed in the Kansas City Star.
I was glad to recently secure federal funds for the Kansas City Kansas Community College’s Automation Engineering Technology Program. This is a model program that supports workforce training in manufacturing and engineering studies so we can make more products in America. We have to secure our supply chains to help lower costs and make more products and jobs here at home – not China.
We’ve seen sparks of that innovative spirit throughout the last few years. When our medical supply chains ground to a halt and frontline workers had no choice but to reuse personal protective equipment, putting themselves at risk, our small and mid-sized manufacturers stepped up.
Companies here in Kansas pivoted their production to the masks and gowns that our health care workers desperately needed. That’s the homegrown flexibility we need to support – and it’s why I introduced legislation to make more medical supplies here at home, especially during times of emergency.
But not every industry had that opportunity to pivot. In KCK, a General Motors plant sat idle for seven months last year because of the semiconductor chips shortage.
Visiting with the folks at Knit-Rite, a great local success story that employs 100 people at their Kansas manufacturing facility. It’s important to me that we keep our smaller manufacturers top of mind as we keep working on securing our supply chains. That’s why I introduced an amendment to the COMPETES Act to ensure small businesses are considered in upgrades to our supply chains, not just big corporations.
These supply chain snags are driving up prices for folks at the car dealership, in the grocery story, and at the gas pump. We need to reverse the trends and invest in American workers and American manufacturing.
As I keep working on concrete and bipartisan solutions to strengthen our supply chains and rein in inflation, I know that folks also need relief right now. That’s why our team has created an online hub to connect folks with resources.
Please click here to visit davids.house.gov/lowercosts to find resources for you and your family. You may be able to find cheaper gas stations or find resources for groceries, housing, health care, and more.
My job is to serve every person and every corner of our community – regardless of party. I know Republicans and Democrats can have good ideas, whether that’s cutting wasteful spending or rebuilding infrastructure. So whether we agree on every issue or not, please know that my team and I are here for you and will make a difference for Kansas however we can.

My warmest regards,
