Los Angeles Police Seeking Gunman Who Killed A Man In Encino
Los Angeles police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the gunman responsible for the fatal shooting of a man in Encino on Saturday. Officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 4500 block of Grimes Place about 11:40 p.m., police said in a statement. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man, who hasn’t yet been identified, died at the scene, police said. He was 37. The gunman remains at large. The motive for the shooting was unknown. Police do not yet have a description of a suspect and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the shooter. Man Killed In Jefferson Park Shooting After Intervening In Argument, LAPD Says
A man was shot and killed after he tried to intervene in an argument between the suspect and another person in Jefferson Park early Sunday, according to police. Los Angeles police said the shooting happened around 1:10 a.m. in the 2600 block of Manhattan Place. Police say a man was arguing with a woman when the victim approached them. That's when police say the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the man. It's unknown if the victim knew the suspect, and further details about the altercation were not immediately available. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. LAPD arrested the suspect. The name of the shooting victim has not been released.

July 4 street takeover in South L.A. ends in fatal gunfire
A rowdy street takeover in South Los Angeles ended in the early hours of Monday with a fatal shooting. About 200 people had gathered by 12:30 a.m. in the Vermont Vista neighborhood, at the intersection of Hoover Street and West Century Boulevard. Cellphone videos posted on KTLA show crowds of people cheering and cars skidding in performative circles. The videos also show fireworks going off and a pickup truck in flames.

Suspect In Murder Of Elderly Asian Man In LA Had Mental Issues That ‘Came Out Of Nowhere’, Uncle Says
A man accused of killing an elderly Asian man in Los Angeles in May had kept to himself before struggling with mental issues, his uncle said. Keonte Woods, 25, was arrested on May 12 in connection with the fatal stabbing of 70-year-old Dal Lee in the 5300 block of South Main Street a week earlier. Newton Area patrol officers responded to the incident and found Lee with a stab wound to his neck. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Lee, a Korean immigrant, was sitting inside his parked van when the May 5 incident occurred. An investigation revealed that a Black male suspect approached him from behind, stabbed him in the neck and then fled west on foot. The suspect, who was captured on surveillance cameras, was later identified as Woods. After his arrest on May 12, he was charged with murder on May 16. Woods, however, is not only facing a murder count. He was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon for a separate attack on April 30. That incident involved another Asian victim: a 30-year-old mathematics student from China, according to the Los Angeles Times. The student suffered a minor hand injury after successfully stopping Woods from sticking a sharpened metal hair pin to his neck.

27-Year-Old Pedestrian IDed As Victim Killed In Pico Union Hit-and-Run; Driver Sought
Coroner's officials on Sunday publicly identified a woman who was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver early the previous morning in Pico Union. Shawnkel Washington was a 27-year-old Los Angeles resident, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office. The crash occurred at about 2:20 a.m. Saturday at Pico Boulevard and Wilton Place, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. A white Nissan sedan was traveling eastbound on Pico when it struck the pedestrian, who was crossing the street at the intersection. "The sedan stopped following the collision, and a male driver exited the vehicle momentarily,'' according to an LAPD news release. "The driver re-entered the vehicle and fled the scene eastbound on Pico Boulevard, failing to identify himself or render aid to the pedestrian.'' The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The LAPD's West Traffic Division urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at (213) 473-0234 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Man In Wheelchair Struck And Killed In Hit-and-Run Crash In North Hollywood
A man in a wheelchair died after he was struck in a hit-and-run crash in North Hollywood early Sunday, authorities said. A dark-colored, four-door sedan was going south on Vineland Avenue at about 2:55 a.m. when it hit the pedestrian between Sherman Way and Vanowen Street , Los Angeles Police Department officials said. The driver took off, and the injured man was later pronounced dead at the scene. He was described as a man in his 50s. His identity was not immediately released. A description of the motorist was not available Sunday morning. Fulfilling Dream, Man Becomes LAPD Rookie At Age 45 After Earning US Citizenship
Forty-two men and women graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy Friday. The diverse class included people from almost every continent, including Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. The class also included one of the oldest graduates on record: 45-year-old Miguel Camarena. "It wasn't easy; it was hard. I had tough times," said Camarena after the ceremony at the Elysian Park Academy. "One of the things that prevented me from doing it (earlier) is I didn't have my citizenship until a couple years ago." The 45-year-old graduate's wife said for a long time she didn't even know her husband dreamed of becoming a police officer. But Veronica Camarena said it quickly became clear when their daughter joined the Reseda police academy magnet program several years ago. "We were actually at the table talking at family dinner, because that's when we talk about our day, and that came up," said Veronica. "It was a shock, and he couldn't have done it before because he wasn't a citizen, and when he became a citizen, that actual day he started finding out about it." Miguel worked at a cellphone repair store for nine years before gaining citizenship.

3 Killed, At Least 6 Injured In Horrific Winnetka Crash
Three men are dead and at least six other people, including a pregnant woman, were injured in a horrific crash in Winnetka Sunday evening, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters responded to the scene around 9 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of W. Vanowen Street and Corbin Avenue. When firefighters arrived they determined three people — a 25-year-old male and two 30-year-old males who had been ejected from a Ford Explorer — were dead at the scene. Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department said the driver of the SUV was going nearly twice the speed limit of 35 mph when he lost control and slammed into oncoming traffic. "This is a huge reminder to all of us that speed, particularly on residential streets in the Valley is really dangerous," LAPD Capt. Andrew Neiman said. Six others sustained "potentially serious" injuries, but were stable upon being transported to the hospital, according to officials.

In Effort To Avert Fires, Nearly 700 Pounds Of Fireworks Collected At Buyback
Los Angeles officials collected nearly 700 pounds of fireworks as part of a buyback program Saturday at Brand Park in Mission Hills. The event, hosted for the second year in a row by Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, was held in response to community concerns about fires breaking out amid a severe drought and historically dry conditions. She said the buyback brought in about a third more illegal fireworks than last year’s event, during which officials collected 514 pounds. “I truly appreciate the community members who voluntarily participated in this buyback effort to remove dangerous fireworks from our communities,” Rodriguez said in a statement, adding that the increase in recovery shows promise for a larger citywide effort. “I look forward to expanding next year to return peace to neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.” Drought conditions can cause fires to spread quickly, particularly in “high” fire severity zones like northeast San Fernando Valley, and fireworks only increase the threat, the councilwoman’s office said. They can also be distressing for people with autism or other sensory issues, as well as those with post-traumatic stress disorder. Pets can also be affected by the bangs and flashes.

Downtown L.A. Jewelry Store Victim Of Smash-and-Grab Robbery
Another jewelry store has been struck by a smash-and-grab robbery, this time in downtown Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. At about 5:30 p.m., a man believed to be in his 30s used a sledgehammer to smash the glass in front of the Mr. Jewelry store in the 600 block of South Hill Street, police said. Police could not confirm how much was stolen, but the robber fled in a blue Cadillac with covered plates. The investigation is ongoing, and police are still searching for the robber.

Kirsten Khyzoma held a number of jobs throughout her teen years: grocery bagger, babysitter and seasonal worker at a Halloween store. The Instagram ad offered what seemed like just another odd job. All the 19-year-old and her friend Samantha Condes had to do, according to the job posting on a skateboarder influencer’s Instagram account, was to drive a few laborers across county lines. The San Francisco teens happened to be in Southern California for a road trip, so the detour east of San Diego that promised them $500 a piece looked like an easy way to make a quick buck, they later recounted, according to court records. As it turned out, there was nothing quick or easy about it. By taking the job, the duo—who became friends while attending John O’Connell Technical High School on Folsom Street—unwittingly became part of a smuggling scheme that got them to illegally transport three undocumented immigrants across the southern border from Mexico to the U.S., according to court records. The underground network that ensnared Khyzoma and Condes—who were both recently sentenced in the U.S. District Court—is part of what officials describe as a growing and widely reported trend.

Suspect In Custody After 6 Killed, Dozens Wounded In Mass Shooting At Highland Park July 4th Parade
The suspected shooter is in custody after six people were killed dozens of others were wounded when a gunman opened fire from a rooftop during the July 4th parade in north suburban Highland Park on Monday. Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jogmen said 22-year-old Robert "Bobby" E. Crimo III was arrested around 6:30 p.m., more than eight hours after the shooting, following a chase in the north suburbs. Jogmen said police in North Chicago spotted Crimo's vehicle near Buckley Road and U.S. Route 41, and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but Crimo fled the scene. North Chicago police called for reinforcements, and Crimo's vehicle was stopped about six miles away near Westleigh Road and U.S. 41. He was taken into custody without incident, and charges were pending Monday evening as police continue to investigate. Highland Park Police Cmdr. Chris O'Neill said the shooting happened around 10:15 a.m. during the parade in Highland Park. Authorities said the gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop using a high-powered rifle.

Crews Knock Down Massive Warehouse Fire In Woodland Hills
The Los Angeles Fire Department knocked down a massive warehouse fire in Woodland Hills Sunday night. The fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday in a building on N. DeSoto Avenue in Woodland Hills, near Pearce College. Fire officials later determined the building was a vacant warehouse. Before the knockdown, the fire was elevated to Major Emergency status by 9:30 p.m., with more than 80 firefighters battling the blaze. SkyFOX was over the scene of the blaze Sunday night while crews worked to put it out. The fire had shot through the roof and smoke could be seen from miles away. The LAFD said the fire was knocked down in just over an hour. The fire caused some structural instability in the building, making certain pockets of the fire difficult to reach with hoses, therefore crews will remain at the scene. LAFD's Arson and Counter-Terrorism section is investigating what led to Sunday night's fire. No injuries were reported.

Sun Valley House Fire Put Out By Firefighters
Los Angeles firefighters responded to a home in Sun Valley Saturday night after a fire broke out inside a home. The fire was first reported around 11:35 p.m. at the home located on the 8300 block of North Bellingham Avenue. Firefighters found a single room in the home on fire, which was knocked down within 15 minutes of them arriving on scene. No injuries were reported, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. One person, an elderly woman who briefly received medical attention by paramedics on scene, told a reporter that she was inside the home when the fire first began. She said her neighbors rescued her from the home after they saw her struggling to get out. The woman has lived alone in the home since her husband died about five years ago, she said. A firefighter interrupted the interview to present the woman with a photo album of precious memories that she worried was lost in the blaze.“That’s a real hero,” one person at the scene could be heard hearing after the woman was reunited with the photo album. The cause of the fire is under investigation by LAFD.
