I want to introduce you to Manuela. Manuela was unjustly sentenced to 30 years in prison after suffering an obstetric emergency under El Salvador's severe abortion laws.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Center for Reproductive Rights

Dear Center supporters,

I want to introduce you to Manuela. After suffering an obstetric emergency, Manuela was unjustly sentenced to 30 years in prison under El Salvador's severe abortion laws. She later died from Hodgkin's lymphoma because she was not given medical treatment in prison.

We have been working alongside our local partner, la Agrupación Ciudadana por la Despenalización del Aborto, on behalf of Manuela's family since 2012, and we will continue fighting to prevent the cruel and unnecessary punishment of innocent women under laws and policies like those in El Salvador.

Your generous support allows us to stand up for women and girls just like Manuela whenever and wherever we are needed. That's why I hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity to have FOUR times the impact when you make a generous contribution before December 31.

That's right, a dedicated group of Center supporters will match your gift of $25 or more $3 for every $1, up to $200,000, to support our work around the globe in the coming year.

For nearly two decades, El Salvador has criminalized abortion in all circumstances—even when necessary to save a woman's life—imposing harsh criminal penalties on both women and physicians. The ban has resulted in the imprisonment of countless women who have suffered pregnancy-related complications and miscarriages who are charged for having an abortion and wrongfully convicted of homicide.

Manuela's case will allow the Inter-American Court to create standards with which all states across Latin America and the Carribean in the Inter-American System on Human Rights must comply to guarantee women's right to life and health—including those imprisoned.

Will you help us create a world where reproductive rights are respected as the bedrock human rights that they are by making a generous gift today? Don't forget, any gift you make before the end of the year will be MATCHED to go four times as far in supporting our vision!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Catalina Martínez Coral
Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean
