John,

The Environmental Protection Agency has warned that two nonstick chemical compounds that have been widely used in consumer products for decades are now readily found in our drinking water. And more concerningly, even when in concentrations so low that we cannot detect them with current technology, they still pose significant health risks.

These two compounds are PFOA and PFOS, two forms of the larger “forever chemical” class known as PFAS. Some common uses of the two compounds were in products like nonstick pans, cardboard packaging, carpets, and firefighting foam. While U.S. manufacturers have voluntarily phased these two out, their widespread usage until very recently has resulted in contamination of water supplies across the country.

And worse, there are still many other types of PFAS currently on the market, which could pose similar risks.

Because of the work of SEEC members like Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law included $1 billion for states and territories to spend to address PFAS contamination. As this money is starting to be rolled out, the EPA is also working on issuing new, tighter guidelines on what levels of PFAS concentration are considered safe.

Since these products have been on the market for decades, the problem of PFAS contamination is pervasive across the country, and we will need sustained, dedicated efforts to fully tackle the problem. That’s where SEEC comes in.

John,SEEC members of Congress have proven that they won’t let up on this issue until all of our drinking water is safe from pollution. However, many of them are currently at risk of losing their reelections unless we step up now to make sure they stay in their seats.
