With six conservative justices the Supreme Court has become, according to the New York Times, the most pro-religion Court in seven decades. So the religious right has a lot to celebrate this holiday weekend. They won significant cases in recent weeks that show us where this Court is headed.
The six justices said the State of Maine must include religious schools in a program for rural students who pick what nearby high school to attend. The most egregious win was the case of Kennedy v. Bremerton in which a high school coach was given the right to pray on the field after games with players. This was decided wrongly on so many levels. In fact, the majority on the Court ignored photographic evidence that there was a crowd of his players around him and said he had the right to private, personal prayer.
We need to stand up and take action to defend the separation of religion and government. If the Supreme Court will not protect us, we need to work with our allies in Congress to create laws and national policies that will. That is what we do.
