Happy Independence Day, john!

Every year on this day, we celebrate our nation's birthday and the freedoms that have been afforded to us. This year's celebrations feel a bit different.

Our country was founded 246 years ago on the principle that people have an inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But in recent weeks an overwhelmingly conservative, out of touch Supreme Court has reversed freedoms we’ve come to take for granted, and there is reason to be concerned that they are not finished with changing policy from the bench. Last month, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, meaning millions of women across the country have lost the right to make their own reproductive health care decisions.

Last week, the Supreme Court restricted the EPA’s ability to enforce environmental standards for power plant emissions, essentially taking that oversight away from scientists, and dealing a blow to meaningful efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

And we expect them to take up a case regarding whether individual state legislatures can have unchecked power over elections, including federal elections. This, when the Trump campaign has been exposed for pressuring state legislatures to overturn a free and fair election. That scheme only failed because a handful of people resisted that pressure.

This Fourth of July, while we celebrate freedom and opportunity, let’s put our concern into action. Let’s hold our House majority. Let’s enshrine voting rights and reproductive rights into law, and protect our democracy.

In short, let’s chart our course to a more perfect union as we celebrate our nation’s birthday.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day,

Kim
