Dear Friend,

As we celebrate Independence Day, it is important to recognize the progress our country has made over the last 250 years. July 4th is a day both to celebrate and reflect on our freedoms and our democracy. Today, we remember those who came before us, who fought for our independence and established this great nation, and those who have worked every generation since to build a more perfect union and realize the promises of American democracy. This morning, I am reflecting on our nation’s history and the urgent need to defend our democratic institutions and values as your representative in Congress.  This includes restoring faith in our democratic institutions, ensuring we are serving the needs of our communities, and protecting the fundamental right to vote.

In the U.S. House of Representatives I was proud to cosponsor and vote to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4), to defend the 1965 Voting Rights Act and expand federal protections for voters across the U.S. I also cosponsored and voted to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act (H.R. 5314) to ensure we protect our democracy’s checks and balances.  I am also a proud cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 3755) to codify Roe vs. Wade in statute, which we passed in the House months ago. And, I am fighting to get the Equality Act (H.R. 5) and other pieces of legislation to protect LGBTQ+ rights enacted.  All of these pieces of legislation have passed the people’s House and are sitting in the Senate. That is why I continue to urge my colleagues in the Senate to eliminate the filibuster and pass these urgent pieces of legislation.

These are difficult days. But, I want you to know: we are all keepers and defenders of our democracy. We must work together to raise our voices and defend the rights of our citizens as we continue the work to build a more perfect, just, and equitable union.

How are you celebrating Independence Day?
