Friends, reflecting on the 4th of July, I can’t help but think about the children who should be running around with sparklers in Uvalde, and the women spending the long weekend traveling out-of-state to access basic abortion services.

Tonight the celebrations will be at odds with many of our feelings, as we grapple with the reality of our political landscape. I want to let you know that it’s OK to feel grief today.

It’s also OK to celebrate — to take time to be with friends and family, enjoy the weather, and be at peace.

Our movement to build a more perfect union continues, and you deserve a day of rest and joy amidst all this struggle. Our country will face many serious challenges in the coming months, but days like July 4th spent with our community remind us why we march on.

With love,

Dr. Kermit Jones

P.S. Many of my fellow veterans suffer from PTSD — to help break the stigma, I want to share that I have as well. Days like tonight can be hard for those who hear the fireworks and are taken back to the sounds of gunfire and detonations. If you are a veteran in need of support tonight or any other time, VeteransCrisisLine.com is available to help.
