www.trishgunby.com [www.trishgunby.com]JOHN,
On this July 4th, I’m mindful of two things:
1.
My
dad,
Felix,
isn't
with
us
to
celebrate
his
95th
birthday
2.
Our
country
remains
a
sizable
work
in
progress
My dad was so proud to be an American that it’s only fitting he was born on the 4th. Throughout his childhood, his family struggled financially, leading to his joining the Army at the tail end of WWII because he was in desperate need of a new pair of boots. Those boots would eventually see action in Korea, an experience we rarely talked about. I’ll be forever grateful for the kind folks at Greater St. Louis Honor Flight [[link removed]] who helped him find some peace shortly before his passing.

As for our nation's birthday, we find ourselves celebrating in the midst of threats to our democracy and our bodily autonomy. Our country is young, and if we expect it to age gracefully, we must resist the draw of tyranny right now— not only when it is convenient, lest it come too late.
My father and I agreed about very little politically, but I know he would be disheartened by the factionalism in our country. That’s why I’m committed to passing the sort of big, material reforms to American industry, healthcare, and education that transcend party politics and benefit all of us, equally.

Enjoy your holiday weekend, then let’s get back to the doors!
Best,
