As we celebrate July 4th, we all recognize that our democratic republic is more fragile than ever. As Judge Michael Luttig put it at the January 6 hearings: “A stake was driven through the heart of American democracy on January 6, 2021, and our democracy today is on a knife’s edge.” Judge Luttig’s warning is that the threat of January 6 is not in the past; indeed, without a true recommitment to the rule of law, facts, and honoring the will of the people, we could lose our democratic republic itself.
The warnings from Judge Luttig and others are not overstatements. Our founders committed our nation on a path to defend the rule of law and honor the will of the people. What happened on January 6 represents the opposite of those values. That’s why I led a 47 State AG coalition [[link removed]] to condemn the illegal conduct of those who invaded the U.S. Capitol, seeking to disrupt the peaceful transition of power and harm our elected officials, and to call for accountability for those lawbreakers.
In Colorado, we take seriously our role as the Centennial State–founded 100 years after 1776–and we honor the basic ethos of a nation committed to working together to solve problems, not engaging in the demonization of others.
As we work hard in the upcoming campaign, we must not forget that our democracy itself is on the ballot. As your Attorney General, I take the protection of our elections and our democracy very seriously and will continue to defend the rule of law as our highest value.
