Nearly two and a half centuries ago, our nation’s founders put forth this extraordinary proclamation – one that has shaped the fabric of our culture and democracy for the better. These inspiring words led to the creation of our country and the possibility – not the guarantee – of creating a democratic nation, free from tyranny and oppression.
But {{Salutation,DefaultTo=team}, over the past few years, we have been reminded that our democracy and the very pillars it rests upon are neither promised nor unbreakable. We have seen a mob of violent insurrectionists storm the Capitol, millions of people lose their right to bodily autonomy, and an overwhelming rise in far-right extremism and violence.
This Independence Day, I hope you will join me in the fight to preserve and protect our democracy – for everyone. Our country's future isn't predetermined – and our actions will dictate where we go from here. Each of us has a role to play. We must reject oppression and extremism. We must embrace the notion that we aren’t free until we’re all free.
Today is not just a day of parades, fireworks, and hot dogs.
It’s a day when we can all commit to doing the work required to build a more perfect union and finally live up to the ideals of freedom and equality for all. It's going to take all of us staying vigilant, engaged, and active to get there.
