Today is a day for celebration and an opportunity to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in a country where freedom, opportunity and equality are more than just ideals, they are the guiding principles we strive for every day.
We haven’t always lived up to these ideals and these past few weeks, with the rollback of women’s fundamental rights and the floodgate it has opened for future attacks on the civil rights of so many Americans, were a stark reminder of what’s at stake.
While our history is marked with errors and times we have failed to live up to our founding ideals, it is also filled with stories of ordinary Americans banding together to do extraordinary things. Of American heroes like John Lewis and Opal Lee, who believed that they could make a difference in this country and whose actions helped move us towards a more perfect union.
I believe in this country and our ability for change. But it will take all of us who don’t want to see our country go back any further banding together to build the nation we all know we can be.
