Friends,

Today, Americans in every part of our country and worldwide are commemorating the Fourth of July.

Since 1776, our great American experiment has been a beacon of hope for other nations striving for democracy and freedom.

Our Founders lived in turbulent times, and their actions did not come without significant risk. They wrote a Declaration of Independence, a Constitution, and a Bill of Rights and created democratic institutions to help our fledgling Republic navigate periods of uncertainty.

Today, 246 years later, we continue to face uncertain times. Times in which freedom is under attack for every marginalized community and the very foundations of our democracy are on shaky ground.

Whether in the Army or in Congress, I swore to defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I take that oath seriously and will continue to defend every American’s inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as Maryland’s next Attorney General.

So this Fourth of July, I urge all of you to recommit to standing up for justice, fighting back against oppression, and defending our democracy. It’s the most American thing you can do. And don’t forget, early voting starts on July 7th, and the primary election is on July 19th!
